Leonard Maré is the ministry leader for the Academi and Formatio at Mosaiek. He also serves as the Head of the Department of Old Testament at the Auckland Park Theological Seminary (ATS). In 2010 he was appointed as extraordinary professor of Old Testament at North-West University, Potchefstroom campus. In addition to this, he is also part of the team of translators for the new Bible translation in Afrikaans.
Leonard holds the B.A., B.A. Hons. (Semitic languages), M.A. (Semitic languages), M.A. (Biblical
Studies), M.A. (Church Leadership) and D. Litt et. Phil (Old Testament) degrees from Rand Afrikaans
University (now part of the University of Johannesburg). He is currently enrolled for a Ph.D degree in
New Testament at the Radboud University in Nijmegen, Netherlands.
In addition to teaching Old Testament and Hebrew at graduate level at ATS and UJ, Leonard has acted as supervisor for 7 Masters students and 1 Doctoral student and as external examiner for 14 Masters students and 12 Doctoral students. He has published 30 articles in accredited journals, two articles in academic books, and 30 book reviews. He has also presented 18 academic papers at conferences in South Africa, the USA and Europe. He is the co-author, with Stephan Joubert, of the book Ontsluit die Bybel, published in 2015 by CUM.
Leonard is a member of the following professional societies: Old Testament Society of South Africa (OTSSA), Society for Biblical Literature (SBL), Society for Pentecostal Studies (SPS) and South African Society for Near Eastern Studies (SASNES). He also serves as member of the Advisory Committee for Bible translation in Afrikaans and is a member of the editorial board of the Journal of Biblical and Pneumatological Research published by Wipf & Stock. He is also a member of the Board of Referees of Conspectus, the online journal of the South African Theological Seminary (SATS).
His academic interest is the Book of Psalms, lament in the Bible and early Christian tradition, the Poetical and Wisdom literature of the Hebrew Bible, Old Testament Hermeneutics and Theology and
Leonard is married to Sandra and they have two children; Ruan and Luzaan. Leonard confesses an addiction to books and reading. He also enjoys listening to music (especially classical music and opera), and believes that there will be a Starbucks in heaven.
